Doctors, scientists and researchers are making more and more discoveries linking poor nutrition to chronic diseases here in the U.S.

The Harvard School of Public Health states “aside from not smoking, the most important determinants of good health are what we eat and how active we are”.

Former surgeon general C. Everett Koop  stated that “diet related diseases account for 68% of all deaths”.

Proper nutrition is vital to overall good health no matter how young or old you are. To function properly, your body must take in adequate amounts of several vitamins and minerals as well as of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. But not only is proper nutrition important for maintaining good health, it can also help in improving and even preventing many chronic medical conditions including cancer.

couple exercising 1Most people already know the importance of exercise when it comes to improving their state of health and fitness to look and feel their best. But what a lot of folks don’t realize is the important role exercise plays in the prevention of chronic disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Regular physical exercise is one of the most important things you can do for your health” and that “age, ethnicity, shape or size do not matter.” Like proper nutrition, regular activity can also reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease and other chronic diseases, help prevent obesity, and increase your energy level. It's never too early or too late to start regardless of your current state of health or medical condition.

COULD THE FOODS WE EAT BE MAKING US SICK?
These days, we are provided with a wealth of information about nutrition. From diet books to magazines to newspaper articles, everyone seems to have an opinion about what we should be eating. It’s no secret that good nutrition plays an essential role in maintaining health and the food and physical activity choices we make every day affects our health now as well as in the future. Yet, with all this knowledge and information right at our fingertips, America’s health seems to have been steadily declining over the past decade. “The way we farm now is destructive of the soil, the environment and us”, says Doug Gurian-Sherman, a senior scientist with the food and environment program at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and that “worst of all, our food is increasingly bad for us, even dangerous”. Modern food-hogsThere is growing concern that modern farming methods such as genetic modification, factory farming, and the use of pesticides, herbicides, and growth hormones have depleted our foods of their intended nutritional value and has contributed greatly to America’s high instance of chronic disease. Most of us take for granted the abundance and convenience of the food stocking our supermarket shelves, but we believe that we should remain alert to the health implications of what we eat and should always try to make the best choices from what is available.
